Maintain Proper Posture

I like big [glutes] and I cannot lie. No other chiropractor will deny. When a patient walks in with an in-i-hibited gait, cannot keep pace I get sprung pull up tough ‘cause I know that [glute medius] has inappropriate flexor: extensor ratios. Ok, so my rhyming is weak, but so is your rear end. When you sit, your glutes are off. By the law of Sheraton’s reciprocal inhibition; your iliopsoas (a hip muscle) is automatically overly activated, which will cause anterior rotation of your sacro-iliac (part of the pelvis) and…

Do I Need a Nutrition Consult?

How often do you use supplements in your nutrition regimen? Taking vitamin supplements is not an exact science.  There is a list of vitamins professionals recommend for most people to take each day, but are you “most people”?  Some medications interact with vitamin supplements.  Some people have conditions that some supplements should not be taken with.  Some people need a different list for optimal nutritional health.  Some people need to take certain supplements together for them to work properly.  Sometimes your list of supplements changes with the seasons and sometimes…

Two Lessons Learned, Again.

While we were traveling a few weeks ago, my computer bag slipped off my shoulder and I caught it on my arm right below my elbow. No big deal -my arm was a little sore. I chose to ignore the small injury and went on with my life. I didn’t think anything of it. Last week I noticed that my wrist is a little sore. But again a little soreness isn’t much, so I didn’t do anything about it. Now a few days later my wrist is really sore! It hurts to…

Strengthen Your Core

Your core zippers the two halves of your body together.  The core muscles support your spine, control the body’s balance, and center of gravity. When your core is not strong, it causes joints and muscles that are not in charge of balance to have to take over for the core muscles. This can lead to poor performance, fatigue, pain, and damage to the joints.  Solution: don’t have kids…  Just kidding, but seriously: being pregnant, c sections, and other surgeries in the belly area can cause weakness in the core.  Core…

Dangers of Energy Drinks

Energy drinks, not to be confused with sport drinks used to rehydrate the body, have become extremely popular over the past few years with young adults and teens alike. This has become an over 5 billion dollar industry in North America. Manufacturers claim their products boost your energy and increase mental alertness. However, the side effects caused by some of the ingredients concern a lot of health experts. Energy drinks, such as 5-hour Energy, Red Bull, Rockstar, and Monster, which often appeal to children, can and will cause headaches, migraines,…

How is your posture?

If you are like most people, you just sat up straighter.  Some people will admit their posture is off; many that don’t, should.  In our society today there are many factors that contribute to bad posture.  Texting is one!  Many people work on computers all day.  The way you sit, stand, read, drive, and work can all put added stress on your spine.  Here is a summary of research in the journal Surgical Technology International.

Flip Flops are NOT Shoes

So anyone who knows me knows I love shoes!  My kids have also inherited my love of shoes.  What they don’t love is a daddy who knows about shoes and how footwear affects your body.  The shoes you choose are important!  Take tennis shoes for example: they are not all made alike, and they are not all the same support level or the same shape. Not all feet and shoes are the same shape; and all 7’s aren’t exactly the same size and shape either.

What should you know about Vitamin D?

You can eat your vitamin D Vitamin D is found in small amounts in a few foods including fish such as herring, mackerel and tuna. Vitamin D is added to dairy products, juices, and cereals. These are labeled as “fortified with vitamin D.” You are my Sunshine… Most vitamin D – 80% to 90% of what the body gets – can be obtained through exposure of the skin to sunlight. The skin then makes vitamin D. For the skin to make vitamin D, direct exposure is needed for 15 min…
