Plantar Fasciitis / Heel Spurs Pain Treatment in Bel Air, MD
Plantar Fasciitis (pronounced PLAN-tar fashee-EYE-tiss) is an inflammation of the plantar fascia or connective tissue on the bottom of the foot.
Our feet are busy. We use them for everything. The plantar fascia supports the arch and connects the front of the foot to the heel. The fascia endures extreme pressure up to ten times body weight when we walk. Due to the repetitive nature of walking, plantar fasciitis may be considered a repetitive stress disorder and usually does not go away without help.
If left unchecked plantar fasciitis can create heel spurs and both can grow into a bigger problem that can be quite disabling. Our goal is always to fix the current problem and prevent it from happening again. Physical therapy modalities to heal the area and address the inflammation, especially ultrasound or laser. Dry needling, foot orthotics and PT help correct the issues that led to heel spurs and plantar fasciitis and prevent them from returning.
Not always, it depends on the cause of your issue. There are custom foot orthotics that chiropractors can provide. There are adjustments that can be done to the foot and ankle to be sure those joints are moving in the correct range of motion, and this will mitigate the tension on the plantar fascia when walking. Strengthening and stretching the muscles in the leg can also help.
Typically, heel spurs do not cause pain or symptoms themselves. Heel spurs are the result of longstanding stress on the plantar fascia (see plantar fasciitis). The plantar fascia is subject to Wolff’s law. Which basically states the body produces more bone or makes new bone when that area is stressed. A heel spur is essentially a bone spur; caused by chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia.
However, if left unchecked, a heel spur will grow into a big problem that can be quite disabling. Early and proper treatment though will prevent this.
