Pinched Nerve
There are thousands upon thousands of nerves in the body. Any of them could get pinched at any time. We will discuss some of the more common ones here, but the possibilities are practically unlimited.
What is a pinched nerve?
A pinched nerve is a term that describes when a nerve has too much pressure applied to it. Nerves often live in narrow passageways and surrounding tissues can become inflamed or swollen causing the nerve function to be disrupted.
Symptoms of a pinched nerve
When the function of a nerve is interrupted there is usually pain, numbness, burning, and tingling radiating down the nerve path. Often it will feel like the area has fallen asleep. You may lose strength or range of motion as well.
Treatment of a Pinched Nerve
Really a pinched nerve is a symptom of a different issue. Our providers will determine the cause of the pinched nerve and then treat the surrounding areas. Once these issues are addressed the inflammation and swelling can be reduced, the pressure on the nerve will be alleviated and those symptoms from the nerve will go away.
Most common pinched nerves:
- Sciatica (Buttock & down the leg)
- Thoracic outlet (neck, chest & arm)
- Carpel tunnel (wrist)
- Tarsal Tunnel (feet)
There are 2 main categories of pinched nerves: Central and Peripheral neuropathies.
- Central Neuropathies:
- Occurs in and around the spine.
- Usually secondary to a disc disorder and/or stenosis.
- Peripheral Neuropathies:
- Happens away from the spine.
- Caused by:
- Muscle Knots
- Anatomical variations
- Prolonged pressures and positions
- Poor posture
- Swelling
- Injuries
