Disc Degeneration Pain Treatment in Bel Air, MD
Disc pain and injury are common. Disc conditions are categorized by descriptive terms to define the severity of the disc injury.
Dehydration of the disc itself, not systemic. Disc dehydration comes about due to chemical and biomechanical alterations brought on by the stressors of life. Think a green stick. Young sticks can be bent and twisted, dried out sticks break easily.
The adult spine is made up of vertebrae and discs in between. We use the spine in everything we do, so disc injuries are very common. The disc is made of two substances: the outer annular rings and the inner nucleus (think jelly donut).
Disc pain can be caused by a traumatic event or wear and tear where the condition progressively gets worse. In wear and tear conditions, the outer bands of the discs are like an elastic band or even like the fan belt on your automobile. With time and activity, the fibers become dry and cracked and start to lose structural integrity, and problems arise.
Degeneration starts when the disc begins to dry out and thin out. It further develops into degenerative disc disease and is the start of all wear and tear disc injuries. Degenerative Disc Disease, a variant of osteoarthritis can be common in adults over 40. As the disc dry, they do not function as well as shock absorbers, become cracked and the integrity of the outer wall can be compromised and lead to bulging or herniated disc. (link to that page)
Inflammation, discomfort, and pain can all occur at this stage. Some patients don’t feel any symptoms. Or they attribute the aches and pains as just getting old.
PT strengthening and stretching exercises along with adjustments to keep the associated joint healthy.
Do not ignore disc disease, it is not a badge of honor as you get old. Disc disease is a chronic and progressive disorder. It’s just going to get worse and worse with time. The signs and symptoms may come and go; but the disease is always worsening. Eventually all the king’s horses and all his men could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Don’t let your back be Humpty.
“I injured my back originally in 1986. I had back surgery in 1990. The pain began to come back gradually. I didn’t want to go through another surgery if I could avoid it. My doctor sent me to physical therapy and exercise, which made me worse. I had several spinal injections which only gave me very short term relief. By this time I was in constant pain. MRI of my lower back showed I had degenerative and bulging discs. My friend recommended I try Spinal Decompression. I’m so glad that I did. Now I feel only minor pain on occasion. Spinal Decompression has allowed me to get back to walking and other things I couldn’t do before. Before anyone has surgery I would tell them to try Spinal Decompression.”

“My back gave me constant pain for 3 years. I had three herniated and degenerative discs in my low back. Everything I did caused me pain. I tried epidurals, pain management even IDET surgery. I was thinking of getting another surgery. I was also concerned about all the drugs I was taking to control my pain. Within a few visits I began to notice improvement, over the course of treatment my back got better and better. Presently I’m much better, I can exercise and do many things I couldn’t do before Spinal Decompression treatment. This is a great alternative to surgery.”
