Concussion Pain Treatment in Bel Air MD
A concussion is a result of trauma to the head or body that causes the brain to violently shake and/or hit the inside of the skull. This triggers changes in the brain that interfere with normal brain activity. Non-scientifically, your brain gets sprained and bruised.
Concussions are a major concern, especially in sports. Millions of athletes of all ages every year are diagnosed with concussion/TBI (traumatic brain injury). Rates of concussion are higher in sports such as football, rugby, ice hockey, and wrestling in males, and soccer, cheer, and basketball in females. Concussions may also happen in auto accidents and falls. Basically any time there is trauma to the head.
Cause for concern with concussions
Concussions have moved to the forefront of awareness, particularly in the world of sport. Media, real & scripted, has covered concussion injuries in high-profile and youth athletes who participate in sports from football to soccer to snow sports. Drawing attention to concern regarding concussions:
Acute or recent concussion symptoms:
Post-concussion syndrome is when any of the symptoms listed above are lingering longer than three months. Some may also feel depression or anxiety that was previously not present.
Concussions where one or more symptoms persist longer than normal are classified as post concussion. Treatment may be similar to that of the original concussion. For more information on post concussion, click here.
Just like any injury, the sooner the treatment begins the faster the recovery. Recovery time is also tied to the severity of the concession and the number of previous concussions. Given the litany of possible damage and the complex geography of the brain, treating concussions can be challenging. When you strip a concussion down to labeling it a sprain in the brain then the treatment is similar to other sprains and contusions.
