Tendons are a variant of connective tissue that attaches muscles to the bones. Tendinitis can occur in any tendon. But it’s most common around shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and heels.
What causes Tendonitis?
Injuries, overuse, misuse and just wear and tear over time causes the tendons to get inflamed. One common cause for tendonitis is sports as most sports have repeated overuse of one body area. Daily routines that involve repeated motions or prolonged positions are also known to cause tendonitis.
Symptoms of Tendonitis
Tendonitis can be a very painful and even disabling condition that also can be hard to treat.
Pain at the site of your tendon and the surrounding area. This pain can get worse when you move.
Stiff joints or difficulty moving your joints.
Hearing and feeling a cracking or popping sensation when you move.
Swelling, often with skin discoloration (red to purple or darker than your natural skin tone).
The pain you feel with tendonitis may be gradual sudden or severe.
Treatment of Tendonotis
The key is to correct whatever damage has led to the inflammation through adjustments to the joints and physical therapy of the associated muscles. Long-standing tendonitis may lead to phenomena known as tendinosis or even tendinopathy. These conditions lead to degeneration and atrophy of the tendons. Certain aggressive manual therapies along with dry needling, shockwave, and cold laser have shown to be of great benefit.
Most providers will say rest for two weeks. If you are still experiencing issues even after rest, then your body needs some help to heal.
