What is Occipital Neuralgia

Occipital Neuralgia is one of those terms that can be used to describe a very specific disorder; but sometimes it can be generic too. It’s Latin for “nerve pain in the back of the head.” Its classified as a headache disorder that affects your occipital nerves.

Causes of Occipital Neuralgia

Occipital Neuralgia can be caused by:

Neck injury.
Trigger points & tight muscles in neck.
Pinched nerves in the neck.
Disc issues.

Symptoms Occipital Neuralgia

Aching, burning or throbbing pain starts at base of the head.
Pain behind eye
Shocking or shooting pain.

Treatment Occipital Neuralgia

As with most other conditions, proper diagnosis of the root cause will dictate what treatment plan is best. Most often treat the neck and the headache will also go away. Chiropractic, PT and acupuncture will heal the area and strengthen the muscle to prevent the condition from returning.
